How Hindu Organisations In America and India can Support Trump?

Recently Republican President nominee Donald J Trump was seen in a bizarre advertisement campaign wishing Indian Community “Happy Diwali”, in the same video he was also seen quoting his version of Prime Minister Modi’s 2014 election tagline – “Ab ki bar Trump sarkar”.

Earlier this month at a fundraiser hosted by the Republican Hindu Coalition, Mr Trump was seen praising Hindus, and Indian community. In his speech he ensured that, “The Indian and Hindu community will have a true friend in the White House,” under his administration.

The Republican Hindu Coalition supports Mr Trump for President, according to their official website they believe, “Trump is a Businessman and supports our core principles of 4Fs & RHC strongly endorse Trump for President.“

In May 2016 a Hindu Nationalist organisation, ‘Hindu Sena’ also held a havan puja at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar in support of Mr Trump.

However, it is hard to digest the fact that these organisations (who claim to represent ‘Hindus’) are supporting a beef seller, and beef consumer.

Yes, a beef seller. To many who are unaware of the fact that apart from real estate, Donald Trump also used to own a steaks company called Trump steaks.

And, in his description of the product in an advertisement, Mr Trump mentioned, “Trump steaks, by far, is the best tasting, most flavoured beef you will ever have, truly a league of their own.”

Here’s the video:

You saw how he ends by saying stakes are his Favourite food.

It is ironic how Hindu Sena on one hand urged PM Modi to impose the ban on beef in India last year, while on the other hand supports the Beef consumer Donald J Trump.

It is also astonishing that the Right wing Republican Hindu Coalition, who claims to build a strong Hindu American voice in Washington, is okay with beef sellers. Maybe beef is not an issue for them, unlike our right-winger organisations, who seems to believe that beef ban is as important as giving employment to every Indian.

What is Feminism for Me? And Why You Should Care Too.

It is my duty to radicalise my side that I’m not a feminist. I believe that everyone is equal, irrespective of its colour, cast, creed or GENDER. It is because I belong to a generation which is a result of immense scrutiny over what’s right and what’s wrong. This band of equality shouldn’t be tied to everyone’s eyes and keep moving towards a society which doesn’t realise what a girl had to suffer for what she is today. This is wrong but we still live around people who abstains equality and asks why aren’t we progressing.

1

FEMINISM is not something you talk about in a classroom with a couple of your friends who have a little bit of intellect which one finds so they can talk about it with them. It’s an issue which questions every aspect of a living of a girl or apparently a reason for women to be free.

2

It is easy for a person to say that he/she is not a feminist because equality is what the constitution abides by and that is what we must follow. But where was your constitutional justice when hundreds and thousands of women had to indulge in Sati because then, it wasn’t appropriate for a girl/women to live after her husband died. Where were your humanitarian attributes when a girl had to sacrifice her childhood to lessen the burden of her parents and live with a stranger her entire life. Why didn’t you question that, what was going on was wrong? That this is not equality and they’re suffering a lot.

Decades of torture, injustice and biased decisions and it went on to show how disparaged the thoughts were and how sick it is that we consider this as a step towards progress. Girls and women are not weak. They were and ,at some point, are dominated because of the despicable atrocities of our society. Ironical it is that men worship goddess in such pure manner and yet impose their superiority over women in such indescribable manners.

4

Most of us who talk about feminism are residents of an immensely populated urban areas. Though many of us have our roots in our villages where we come from, but all the disparities tolerated by women even today will not be understood or felt by us even in a cynical way.

Wiki defines Feminism like this : It is a range of political movements, ideologies, and social movements, that share a common goal: to define, establish, and achieve political, economic, personal, and social rights to women. Why do you think that this word even emerged? Why is it that there are more cases of Eve teasing then of Adam teasing? It’s surely questionable and also, very important to understand the gravity of the fact that although we must preach equity in all manners but we must not forget that women in India didn’t have that free outlook which they have today and so we must treat them appropriately and with the respect which they deserve.

You should really read what Ruskin Bond has to tell about Bob Dylan

We all have read his stories in our Middle-School textbooks. Ruskin Bond is not a name that needs introduction. When we read more about him and his life, we find that he is a pure gem that we have in our country. He is one of those writers who devoted his whole life for writing. His works are classics and need to be read through ages. His stories are for children, as he carries the heart of a child.

1

Born in a military hospital in Kasauli, Punjab States Agency, British India, his childhood was spent in Jamnagar and Shimla. Studying in Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, Bond won many writing competitions, including Irwin Divinity prize and Hailey Literature Prize.

One of his first stories was named, “Untouchable” which he wrote at the age of sixteen. It was the year 1951! Such an old man he is, isn’t he? Well, he is 82 years old and still writes and speaks at conferences. He, in my opinion, is the greatest Indian writer alive.

Then in 1951 he went to London for the next two years and there he started penning down his first novel, “The Room on the Roof”. After searching for publisher while working in a photo studio and getting this novel published, he utilised its advance money to pay for his journey to Bombay; and returning India he settled in Dehradun.

2

Ruskin Bond’s life has been full of struggle, but he did what he wanted to. He spent his whole life writing. Because that is what matters in gaining satisfaction. Once, in an interview, Bond revealed that he could not marry and have a family because of no permanent job at hand. The legend now lives in Mussourie and is often lovingly called as ‘writer on the hill’ and he has written a book by the same title. The legend has penned over 500 short stories, essays and novels along with more than 50 books for children. He has been awarded with Sahitya Academy Award (1992) for “Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra”. He has also received Padma Shri in 1999, and Padma Bhushan in 2014.

3

Ruskin Bond has devoted his whole life for literature and when a man of such stature speaks about the one who has been awarded with Nobel Prize for literature, we need to listen to him.

During a conversation organised as part of ‘River Talks – the North East Festival’ Bond said, “Dylan is a successful musician and a great entertainer, but I am not sure whether he was given the award in the right category.

????????????????????????????????????

“Dylan is not really a writer and awarding the prize to him in the literature category is a great insult to all the writers who have already received the award and also to those who rightly deserve it.

“The decision of the Nobel Committee, however, has on several occasions not been right and there is not much one can do about it.”

Mr. Bond has clearly stated his displeasure about Bob Dylan getting Nobel Prize for Literature, and this has made everyone to rethink about it. The world of literature has been made rich by contribution of people who devoted their lives to it, and Ruskin Bond is, definitely, one of those honourable people.

However, there are other arguments too, which say, for instance, that Rabindranath Tagore’s Geetanjali was also a book of songs but since he was not a singer, no controversy arose when he was awarded the Nobel for it.

How would Logan be a painful end of Wolverine

‘I’m the best there is at what I do, but what I do best isn’t very nice’ – Wolverine

We’ve seen memes on how girls cried at the end of the Titanic and how men cried at the end of Fast and Furious 7 when Brian O’Conner drives away from Dominic Toretto. Well it’s time to wipe away tears for comic book fans because this is it. In October 2014 Marvel comics released the official final death of Wolverine/ James Howlett/ Logan.

Hugh Jackman is famous for his live-action role as Wolverine in the X-Men franchise since its first movie in 2000. On October 20, 2016 Hugh Jackman uploaded the first teaser trailer for Logan on his Facebook page. Jackman had earlier announced that this will be his last movie as Wolverine.

1

When Jackman first appeared as Logan in the first X-Men movie in 2000, viewers were left with the clear impression that this is a mutant who has a knack and taste for violence as much as he is helpful. Over the next few movies we got to see the different shades of the character along with his origin story. For those of us who read the comics, Jackman was the perfect reincarnation of Wolverine and we definitely saw him grow better into the character over the movies. From being the protagonist of the movie to just making a cameo to say ‘Go fuck yourself’. Jackman has appeared in every X-Men movie released till date. Whether the movie was a hit or a slow boring clichéd flick, Jackman has never let us down in any of his appearances. If you’ve watched Night at the Museum 3, Hugh Jackman makes a cameo in the movie as himself and does a yelling wolverine stance as well.

2

While the movie is supposed to be based on the comic ‘Old Man Logan’ the movie will be very different from the comic in many ways (because budget and production house duh!). In the comic, we see an aged Wolverine who has stopped using his claws and does not fight any more for reasons that he keeps hidden until later on in the series. He is then due to some tragic circumstances dragged back into the world of chaos which then leads to Wolverine having a faceoff with the Incredible Hulk. It is very obvious that this will not be the storyline for the movie Logan. What the trailer shows need not be explained because no fun in reading it. The most painful thing about watching the trailer is that is gives away a very obvious aura and feeling that this is definitely the last that we will see of wolverine for now. Logan is slated for a March 3, 2017 release.

Source : Youtube.com

From his regular cursing to his constant habit of saying bub, from his sarcasm to his unending sassiness Hugh Jackman has always been the perfect Wolverine. He has always been perfect for the role in every possible way. There may be many more actors who may play the character in future movies but the memory of the first live action Wolverine will forever be etched into our memories. Cheers to Hugh Jackman for 17 years of brilliance as Logan.

This Video of Trump Copying Modi is Going Viral

For Donald Trump, the Indian Hindu community in America is very important. Many of his recent speeches has been trying to woo the Indian voters through various media.

The latest of this attempt is, probably, this video that went viral on social media. In the video Trump copies and modifies Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s famous tagline to ‘Abki Baar Trump Sarkar’.

The authenticity of the video is, however, questionable. It begins with wishing all Indians a Happy Diwali and then goes on to how Trump values Indians in America. It shows how he is interested to work with PM Modi on many international issues. While all this might be true, the audio is out of sync when he is pronouncing the tagline.

The Republican party candidate had recently praised Indians for their fantastic contributions to the world and America. The Hindu community has made fantastic contributions to world civilisation and to American culture and we look forward to celebrating our shared values of free enterprise, hard work, family values, and a strong American foreign policy,” Trump said in a statement.

Further, he declared that, India-US would be best friends if he came to power. “We love Hindus and we love India”, he had said in a statement on October 16.

What the Trailer of ‘Dangal’ Says About the Film

Dangal has started spreading its craze since the release of its official movie trailer. The movie is, as the trailer showed, a biography of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his two daughters, Babita Kumari and Geeta Phogat.

1

Mahavir Singh Phogat is the legendary man who taught wrestling to both his daughters and both of whom proved their worth later in life. Geeta Phogat became the first female wrestler to win at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. She, in Commonwealth Games, won the gold medal. And her sister, Babita Kumari won a Silver. The movie is based on the life of the three, presenting their journey of success, coming from a society where only men were considered eligible for wrestling.

The trailer clarifies that Amir Khan is in the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat himself, who has a dream to make his to-be-born son a wrestler. However, he gets blessed with two daughters. The trailer has been made explanatory enough to make us see that Mahavir Singh was feeling that his dream of making his child a wrestler was crumbling before his eyes with the birth of daughters in his house. But then he realised that having daughters instead of sons was not going to hold him back from training them for wrestling.

3

“Mhari Chhoriyan Chhoro se kam hai ke?” was his response to people who objected. This statement, it seems, is going to be a connotation for the movie to be repeated over and over by all us. The girls appear at village ‘Dangal’ competition and show their calibre to the men. And from there, they later make their way higher in the world of wrestling.

When Amir Khan is there in the movie, naturally, we prepare ourselves for something out of the box to come from it. Dangal too, after watching the trailer we can say, is going to be one of the most applauded movies of this year. Since it is based on wrestling, so there will be a lot of comparison of it with Salman Khan’s Sultan. And since Dangal is based on a true story and also it has a message of breaking gender stereotype attached with it, it is going to stand tall and strong against Sultan.

Source : Youtube

In the world of literature, there are basically two types of fiction—literary fiction, in which the author aims at making the world of literature rich with his book, and the other is Commercial fiction whose sole aim is the sales. If I look at Amir Khan’s movies from the perspective of my author-self, most of his movies can be considered as ‘literary’ in the world of movies, but Dangal, I believe, can be considered as a perfect blend of ‘literary’ and ‘commercial’. The film, as it appears from the trailer, would be focussing on some major social issues together with flow of a whole lot of entertainment.

The trend of making biography of sports-persons into films that began with Bhag Milkha Bhag, is one of the most positively creative idea that has started blooming in Bollywood. M. S. Dhoni, The Untold Story was one of the most inspiring movies in Bollywood, and this culture needs to be carried on. With Dangal hitting the screens, the idea of biographies in Bollywood would reach a new level as it is featured with one of the most furnished actors of India.

3 Judgements by Indian Judiciary A Married Person Must Know

The Indian judiciary seems to be on a spree to change the legal face of marriage and how! In the past one year, I have heard the most absurd of headlines regarding divorces being granted and the verdicts being sounded in the various courts of the country. They seem to be causing a stir among the people. Take the following cases:

March 2016: Delhi high court asks a woman to find a job not to seek alimony from the husband.

Oct 2016: Denying sex to spouse for a long period is ground for divorce -Delhi High court

Oct 2016: Supreme Court – Hindu Son can divorce wife if she tries to separate him from aged parents.

These headlines when read for the first time are bound to cause a rage among people and my first instinct when I read them is to dig into the details. Why have they granted such pleas? In the backdrop of gender equality and fights for women’s rights that are being upheld everywhere in the world a court of law would never sound such a blatantly gender biased verdict out there for the people to attack in a democratic country. There has to be a greater base to the case that is not visible through these meek and narrowly focused headlines of the various newspapers – A common trick by media these days.

These headlines, when reading for the first time, are bound to cause a rage among people and my first instinct when I read them is to dig into the details. Why have they granted such pleas? In the backdrop of gender equality and fights for women’s rights that are being upheld everywhere in the world a court of law would never sound such a blatantly gender-biased verdict out there for the people to attack in a democratic country. There has to be a greater base to the case that is not visible through these meek and narrowly focused headlines of the various newspapers – A common trick by media these days.

CASE 1:

For example, in the first case, the woman who was asking for alimony from her estranged husband has a child from their marriage whose custody is with her. She was not working at the time of the appeal but had been working in the past and is more qualified than her estranged husband. She is physically fully capable of finding and doing a job. In such a case I think Justice Rekha Rani (note – a lady judge) has taken a very progressive decision by saying that the woman should look for a job and support herself while the husband will continue paying for the child. I mean think about it – On one hand, we are fighting for gender equality and claiming that women are at par with men in everything and on the other hand we are portraying women as victims in situations that are not at all worth pity. In fact here we are looking at divorce as a life crushing phenomenon for the woman and making it sound like a taboo when it is not. Justice Rekha Rani has in fact paved a way for the woman to be independent and strong.

1

CASE 2:

As for the second case, when I first read it, I wondered if this was even a judicial matter. Denying sex to your spouse for four long years is not a joke and is a clear indication that your marriage is not working out. You do not need a court to tell you that! Also, sexual intimacy is a personal affair and choice. Both partners are free to deny it if they are unwilling. So why does it sound to me in the headline as if it were a crime to deny sex to your partner? Again, a media trick! Well, in this particular case the couple had two children of 10 and 9 years respectively and this could have been the reason that they tried to stick together despite their differences for the sake of their children. I’m sure this is very common among Indian couples. Many never apply for a divorce out of fear of social taboo and family pressure. In India particularly, where marriages are considered sacred (SAAT JANMON KA BANDHAN, as they say), even thinking about divorce is a social crime. In such a society, I think this verdict is a blessing in disguise for us because it opens a channel for couples who have grown apart to bring it out in public and get the much-needed separation.

2

CASE 3:

The third case is quite unique. It brings up religious sentiments as well as gender issues – a deadly combination to have in one case. First things first, Hinduism has nothing to do with a child taking care of the parent in their old age. Everyone does that. There is no religion in the world that specifically defines that a ‘son’ is the sole support for his parents in old age. People all over the world whether men or women do this because they love their parents!!! Secondly, according to the judge, ‘the wife is expected to be with the family of the husband after the marriage’. So, what about her parents? She has left her parents and come to a new house ‘due to’ her marriage. Why should she do that? In the name of ‘tradition’? If it is a son’s duty to take care and maintain his parents, so is it the daughter’s duty and moral obligation. If a son is brought up and given education by the parents, so is the daughter. So it’s best not to use words like ‘desirable culture’ and ‘common practice’ in this context. I think this case was truly outrageous unless there is more to the behaviour of the wife towards his parents that was not disclosed in the media.

Indian Judiciary about divorce in India Married Person
Upset couple sitting with baby girl

The most recent uproar is about the Uniform Civil Code. This is like a Universal Set in a Venn Diagram which includes all the previously mentioned divorce cases as its subsets and much more. It is a very complex matter with several folds of perspectives tied to it. Various minority groups have various theories as to what effect it would have on their community and how the Indian government has ulterior motives behind reforming the civil code for the country.

I must say the Law Commission has chosen a very democratic method of going about it by seeking public opinion on the matter. They will make a decision based on the public response as to whether to completely abolish the practice of triple talaq and polygamy or to retain it with some amendments. But it is in direct conflict with religious personal laws which is a very sensitive issue and is bound to invite aggressive opposition from minority groups.

What remains to be seen is how the face of marriage in the country changes with these radical moves in the coming decade and whether it truly uplifts and strengthens the Indian Judiciary for women of all religion, caste and creed.

The After-effects of Surgical Strike

After the attack in Uri from Pakistani side, it was reported that a surgical strike was conducted in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir by our Indian Army to demolish terrorist establishments without harming the common people of Pakistan. The news of the surgical strike came as a sense of pride for India, and for Pakistan it came as a shock. And obviously, the tensions between the two nations worsened further, leading to demand of radical powers like MNS to alienate Pakistan to the fullest. The surgical strike and its various interpretations in our country led to different types of restlessness among different people and political parties.

Some international media agencies, maybe due to their affection with Pakistan or due to some other reasons better known to them, reported that no surgical strike on Pakistan has been conducted at all by the Indian Army. This report came as a political tool for parties opposing BJP to attack its very ethics. The international reporting falsifying the surgical strike also gave Pakistan a chance, never mind how flimsy, to flaunt its ‘innocence’ to the world.

In the Indian Politics, Aravind Kejriwal came out to point finger on the BJP government based on the reports that falsified the surgical strike. However, he did not come direct to storm the government by claiming the reports to be true. The Aam Admi Party came out to the media, asking for proof of the surgical strike from the government ‘to shut the mouth of those who are not believing that the surgical strike actually took place’.

1

Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar stated that he supports and appreciates the Army for its action of bravery against Pakistan but do not appreciate the politicisation of the event. Since Mr. Kumar is standing for Liquor Ban, an out of the box measure for improving rural living condition of the country and is constantly urging the state of Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh to implement the measure in those states as well, he wants to remain in the mainstream safe zone of politics, and thus cannot afford to speak any such thing in Central government’s opposition that can produce a bad image for him.

2

The defence Minister, Manohar Parriker, is in jolly, since he has done something truly worth thumping his chest in pride. He is openly coming in front of the media with unmatched audacity. He has given credit to the Army and to the Prime Minister, and has said that there is nothing wrong in taking a little credit. In the race of improving image of himself and of his political associates, he recently came up, almost as an afterthought, to say that the teachings of Sangh led him to take the decision of surgical strike.

3

Like in case of every other achievement of the government or like in times when BJP government claims of an achievement, in this case also, a few percentage of people in every locality who feel they are next to the Prime Minister, have started feeling as though the surgical strike was done for them only to defeat the Congressmen and the leftists who had been criticising Modi government for various issues.

Arnab Goswami is going ballistic over mere mention of the surgical strike from the mouth of anyone who does not support Modi government, never mind what the person actually wants to say.

4

Army is a body of people who stand for the safety of the people of the country by putting their lives to risk. Trying to gain political benefit from the actions and operations of the Army is not only absurd but also hazardous for the country in the long run. It can be easily used by the political party in power to pretend as if the opposition is having antinational sentiments since they are asking questions. This practice will also lead to the alienation of a large section due to their political stand with the opposition—which will definitely lead to increase in the feeling of ‘we’ and ‘they’ within the country.

5

If the Army controls our borders and save us from outside attacks, then who is there to save the country from those powers which act for divide in the country, horribly, claiming their legitimacy by performing hyperbole of the government and of the Army?

Bob Dylan, 1985: “The thing about rock’n’roll is that for me anyway, it wasn’t enough… There were great catch-phrases and driving pulse rhythms… but the songs weren’t serious or didn’t reflect life in a realistic way. I knew that when I got into folk music, it was more of a serious type of thing. The songs are filled with more despair, more sadness, more triumph, more faith in the supernatural, much deeper feelings.”
And then he changed the way people listen to rock or folk! Now he has his own genre to make you move; Bob Dylan’s way!

Nobel to the Bard-Bob Dylan

‘I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And for just that one moment I could be you
Yes I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You’d know what a drag it is to see you.’

What do you see in these couple of couplets? Or should I ask, do they make the ground below your feet move? May be. Do they make you stare at them? Do they remind you of someone? Do you feel they have been written for you? Certainly.
bob

The amalgamation of these and a million other significant and insignificant factors combined became the reason as to why a melody-person was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for the year 2016. Bob Dylan, the personality who is hogging the limelight in newspapers and the television these days,is the epitome of the most enigmatic choice in the history of nominees for Nobel Prize deservers. Being a musician, he grabbed the award for the life in what he writes. He is a magician who evokes magic by the tip of his wand.
Aged 75, seen the world and felt it synonymously, he reincarnates the beauty and serenity of the everyday feelings we encounter within ourselves. Precisely stated by Jodi Picoult that she may even win a Grammy if Dylan can get a Nobel for Literature. Why not!

The boundaries of a boundary-less discipline was defined by the Swedish Academy, which awards the prize, setting the stage where even song lyrics could be incorporated within the folds of Literature just as a novel or a piece of poetry. Great legends like Stephen King, Joyce Carol and Salman Rushdie celebrated his achievement by designating him as “the brilliant inheritor of the bardic tradition”.

‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ are you? The words weaved by him and then given a tune for us to hum makes him leave an indelible mark on the world. This award, not only embraces the diversity that Literature has engulfed within its ambit, but it also surrenders to the bounty of some ways of defining existence, creation, love and life that is not just a tale, not just a cluster of rhyming sentences. But, much more!
