Behold readers, for I shall now reveal to you the secrets hostelers hold behind their closed curtains. And the slightly sadder parts of living by yourself.

1. Breakfast:

This is the very first sign of your ‘Big Switch’ to the dorm life. When there’s no mumma force-feeding you this ‘most important meal of the day’ and you have the right to make bad choices, this meal ceases to exist. Because you know you’re waking up a not more than a half hour early to your class on an average day. This is college, where you grab an apple or a chocolate and you’re good to go.

2. Shower:

Showering everyday in the morning is a myth when it comes to college life and early classes. I’m usually really proud of myself if I can manage to shower in the mornings on two consecutive days. Wet wipes and Deodorants are your best friends in these magical chapters of your life.

3. Sleeping before 1 am in the morning:

You could have been doing this in high school or before that, but then you see hundreds of other girls/boys living their best life at this ‘odd hour’ and you feel normal after all those years of sneakily staying up when you lived with your parents.

4. ‘Me’ Time:

I was a kid who wrote to her diary every day and I haven’t made a single entry after my moving day. Amidst all the hustle, you realise you’ve got very little to no time at all to think about yourself. In addition to this, your hostel mates will ensure that every night feels like a slumber party. Sorry, Bob, too bad I’ve made real friends.

5. Changing clothes in private:

If you’re anything like me, you were shy to change even in front of your mom before the dawn of dorm life. But now, a month into being a hosteller, I now change away to glory before people I’ve just met.

6. A life devoid of Binge-watching:

This hits the worst for people who haven’t done much of this earlier, but don’t you worry regular bingers, there’s always gonna be better shows and new shows and people to expose you to new genres and impose their likes on you. You slowly find that away from home, Joey, Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, Ross and Rachel become your family.

But in all fairness, hostel years are going to be the best years of your life and nothing beats independence. I can’t wait for what’s to come in this lifestyle.
