From Jawaharlal Nehru to Gopinath Munde to Jayalalithaa, India has witnessed several politicians losing their lives while in office. Here is a list to help jog your memory:

The first person from north-east region to receive ‘Bharat Ratna’, Gopinath Bordoloi died on 5th of August 1950. He was the Prime Minister of Assam before India’s Independence and after Independence he served as the Chief Minister of the state.
A leader of Indian National Congress, and Indian Independence movement activist, Ravishankar Shukla was the first Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh from 1 November 1956 to 31 November 1956, when he passed away.
Sri Krishna Sinha
Another Independence Movement activist, Sri Krishna Sinha was known as Bihar Kesari. Influenced by his leadership, Gandhiji gave him the title of ‘The first Satyagrahi of Bihar.’ He remained Chief Minister of Bihar till 1961, and passed away on 31st of January, 1961 while he was Finance Minister of the state.
Bidhan Chandra Roy
Bidhan Chandra Roy was the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. A renowned freedom fighter, he is considered as great architect of West Bengal. He remained as Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1948 until his death in 1962 in Kolkata.
Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, served twice as the President of the Indian National Congress during the Independence struggle. He passed away on May 27, 1964 in New Delhi while still holding the position of Prime Minister of India.
Lal Bahadur Shastri
Lal Bahadur Shastri, an Independence Movement activist and a leader of Indian National Congress, was the second Prime Minister of India from 1964. He remained in office till 1966, when he died on 11th of January 1966 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
An acclaimed writer in the Tamil language, Conjeevaram Natarajan Annadurai was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from February of 1967 to 3rd February, 1969, when he passed away at the age of 59 in Madras, Tamil Nadu.
An educator an intellectual, Zakir Hussain was the 3rd President of India. He was also the country’s 1st Muslim President and also the first to die in office. The shortest serving President was in office from May 13, 1967 to May 3, 1969, when he passed away.
A member of Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, son of Indira Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi was a Member of Parliament for Amethi. He was in office from January 18, 1980 to June 23, 1980, when he died in a plane crash near Safdarjung airport.
Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was the founding leader of the National Conference, and played a central role in the politics of Jammu and Kashmir. Being the 4th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, he passed away on 8th of September, 1982 at the age of 76, while still in office.
One of the most prominent figures in Indian politics, Indira Gandhi was the fourth Prime Minister and the first female Prime Minister of India. She remained in office from 1966 to 1977, and then again, from March 9, 1980 to October 31 1984, when she was assassinated by her bodyguards.
Marudur Gopalan Ramachandran, an actor and politician, was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for ten years, between 1977 and 1987. He passed away on December 24, 1987.
After the assassination of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi became the Prime Minister of India. Being in office from 1984 to 1989, he was the youngest Prime Minister of the country. He was killed on 21 May 1991 in Sriperumbudur, while he was a Member of Parliament for Amethi.
A member of Indian national Congress, Beant Singh was the Chief Minister of Punjab from 1992 to 1995. He was killed in a car bombing done out of retaliation, on Ausgust 31, 1995, in Chandigarh.
Rajesh Pilot, born Rajeshwar Prasad Singh Bidhuri, was a member of Indian National Congress, and held several Ministries in the Government of India in his lifetime. He died on June 11, 2000 in a car accident near Jaipur, while he was a member of Lok Sabha for Dausa, Rajasthan.
YS Rajasekhara Reddy
Yeduguri Sandinti Rajasekhara Reddy was a two-time Chief Minister of the state of Andhra Pradesh. A leader of Indian National Congress, he was also elected four times for Lok Sabha from Kadapa constituency. He was Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh when he died on September 2, 2009.
Gopinath Pandurang Munde was a leader of Bhartiya Janata party and Union Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj in Narendra Modi Cabinet. He died in a road accident on June 3, 2014 in New Delhi, at the age of 64.
Mufti Mohammad Sayeed
Founder of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was a well known Indian politician from Jammu and Kashmir. He had been Chief Minister of J&K for two times and had also served as Home Minister of India from 1989 – 1990. He passed away on January 7, 2016 at AIIMS, Delhi while he was still the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
Jayalalithaa Jayaraman was an actress and powerful politician from Tamil Nadu. The general secretary of AIADMK from 1989, she served as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for five times, over fourteen years, between 1991 and 2016. She was the first woman Chief Minister from South India and was revered as ‘Amma’ in the state. Jayalalithaa passed away on December 5, 2016 defeated by Cardiac arrest while she was still the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
