In hours from now, the Olympics Games will begin but the Indian Tennis Squad seems to be in trouble and disarray, due to the disrespectful and irresponsible actions of Leander Paes.

Leander Paes, who is participating in his 7th Olympics, should have conducted in a better manner. Every Indian athlete looks up to him as his/her model because he is the most experienced Olympian of the country. But he did not live up to his image.

Joining the squad four days after the teammates assembled in Rio is unbecoming of a professional that he is otherwise known to be. He refused to share the same flat with his partner Rohan Bopanna and this will help erase the trust deficit that seems to exist between them. He was expected to arrive with squad on August 1 and practise with Bopanna. But since he arrived on August 4th it seems that the Olympic chances are not too great for the Indian tennis squad.

Former tennis player and coach Enrico Piperno said, “I was pretty puzzled with the fact that Bopanna and Paes hadn’t even played a single tournament leading to the Olympics. They knew in June that they were going to play together.”

Looks like Paes is behaving like a star but stardom increases with your show of professionalism, humbleness and seriousness towards the job on hand rather than starry behavior.

This is certainly going to be Leander’s final Olympics Games. So he should have shown more focus and intent to get a medal rather than create farce that was not necessary.

What do you think? Wasn’t this disrespect for his game and the country he is representing?
