Pakistani online celebrity, Qandeel Baloch has been killed allegedly by her brother in a suspected case of honour killing.
According to Pakistani media, Ms. Baloch was shot dead by her own 30-year-old brother three days back in Multan, her hometown where she went to celebrate EID with her family. She was known for her bold videos and statements on Facebook.
Three weeks ago, Ms. Baloch wrote to Pakistan’s Interior Minister and the Senior Superintendent of Police in Islamabad asking them to provide security to her as her brother was allegedly threatening her via calls on her cell phone for uploading her pictures and videos on the Internet.
Last week itself her music video ‘Ban’ with Pakistani pop singer Aryan khan was released and gone viral. Which also sparked a debate in the country. “baby, please don’t do it again” was one of the phrases used in the song. And after this horrific incident, it seems like she’ll really be never able to do this again.
Honour killing has become very common in the sub-continent. What can be more horrific and heinous than a brother killing his own sister in the name of culture, society, and honuor? No one has any right to interfere in any sane person’s legit decision about their body, their sexuality, their life and choice of profession. If one’s honour is at the stake it’s of individual, not their whole family.
Killing in the name of honour is the worse example of ego. And, only a moral-less person can indulge himself or herself in ‘Moral policing’.
