I love the characters from my favourite books more than I love most people in my life. And a huge chunk of my time is spent dreaming of meeting them in real life or even being a small part of their stories. Over time I have fallen in love with a lot of these fictional personas. The greatest perk of having a book boyfriend is that you can have as many of them as you want and others wouldn’t mind at all. My book boyfriends have had such deep effect on me, they also serve as reference standards for dating men. That’s not good though , because very few men live up to my heightened expectations that literature has given rise to. Anyways, here I present favourite book boyfriends.

1. THOMAS ‘TOM’ SAWYER- ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER BY MARK TWAIN
He was my first love. Definitely an unusual choice, but this wacky personification of mischief appealed just too strongly to my 10 year old self. All his adventurous escapades and bromance with Hucklebery Finn and Sid left me awestruck. Back then , all I wanted was to be a part of their gang and lives my days on the banks of Mississippi.

2. FRANK AND JOE HARDY- HARDY BOYS BY FRANKLIN.W.DIXON
I’m not really sure who I was more fond of- the shy and serious elder, Frank or the younger flirtatious stud, Joe. But both these American Teen Against Crime agents were equally admired by me for their bravery and intelligence.

3. JERVIS PENDLETON- DADDY LONG LEGS BY JEAN WEBSTERC
My ultimate teenage fantasy. Stuff that fairytales are made up of. A trustee of the orphanage offers to sponsor Judy Abbott’s higher studies and finances when she is asked to leave the orphanage on turning 18. He doesn’t disclose his identity though. Judy only catches a glimpse of his legs as he leaves and so she refers to him as , Daddy long legs. She regularly writes to him , describing her college life and studies. She spends her holidays at her sponsor’s country house where she meets , a young and charming Jervis Pendleton and they both fall in love. It is revealed in the end that Jervis Pendleton is none other than Daddy long legs.
A good many years of my teenage went into hoping that someday some hot millionaire would offer to sponsor my higher studies too. Sadly that stuff happens only in books. No Daddy long legs for me. *Sigh*

4. EDWARD CULLEN-THE TWILIGHT SAGA BY STEPHANIE MEYER
Oh c’mon u judgemental people! I know the story was lousy and lousier was the movie.
But this hot vampire was some awesome boyfriend material. Deliciously good looking, intense, strong ,loyal, romantic, protective and indulgent. Now don’t get confused people, I am not talking about Robert Pattinson.

5. THEODORE ‘TEDDY’ LAWRENCE- LITTLE WOMEN BY LOUISA MAY ALCOTT
This lovely novel about the lives of the March sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy could have been the stage for one of the sweetest love stories ever if Teddy had married Jo instead of Amy. I could never really get over the tragedy and the author’s justification that it was best that Jo and Teddy remained friends only and that Amy was a more suitable spouse for him. It really broke my heart when those two didn’t end up together. I was so fond of Teddy and continue being so, that even bae got nicknamed Teddy. *wink*

6. Mr.DARCY- PRIDE AND PREJUDICE BY JANE AUSTEN
Oh you lucky bitch Elizabeth Bennett! You got to marry him! Mr.Fitzwilliam Darcy- the gentleman, the perfect marriage material. Alright, he was arrogant af. But that can easily be overlooked for how breathtakingly charming and romantic he was. Not to forget his wealthy status. No wonder all the ladies in the novel wanted him for themselves.

7. HEATHCLIFF-WUTHERING HEIGHTS BY EMILY BRONTE
Okay, one can never really be sure if Heathcliff was the hero or the villain of his own story. He is definitely one of the most complicated and mesmerizing characters ever created. It was due to his all consuming love and passion for Catherine and his subsequent separation from her that led him onto the path of vengeance, destroying both him and those around him. Heathcliff sure was a dark and malicious individual but that didn’t stop me from crushing over him.

8. JAIME MIRO-THE SANDS OF TIME BY SIDNEY SHELDON
Proclaimed a rebel by his people and a terrorist by the government, he was one passionate leader. And his intense love affair with escaped nun , Sister Megan , set against the backdrop of Spain , was pure delight. He was passionate about the cause he believed in and brave enough to risk his life for it. Not to mention, sexy af.

9. OLIVER BARETT-LOVE STORY BY ERICH SEGAL
“Love means not ever having to say you’re sorry”. How I love that novel and how I love you Ollie! . This is one love story which has made millions fall in love with it over decades. A story of how an arrogant, wealthy, Harvard jock, Oliver falls in love with his competitive classmate Jenny Cavilleri, marries her against his parent’s wishes and how they start their lives anew, from scratch, with nothing but each other for support. Even though it’s the most tragic story ever because Jenny dies in the end, but Oliver’s love for Jenny makes me believe in true love.

10. LORD SHIVA- THE SHIVA TRILOGY BY AMISH TRIPATHI
Agreed, he’s a God. But he wasn’t a God in The Shiva Trilogy. Amish Tripathi depicted him as a human , a warrior , who fought and struggled to win over evil to achieve the God status that he is given by people today. Amish’s Shiva is so cool, so full of swag and so charming, one cannot help wishing for a spouse like him. *No offense to religious folks*

So that was my list. It’s definitely not exhaustive. But I’ve had so many book boyfriends, it would be really troublesome listing them all here. Were any of your favourites in my list? If not, don’t mind, you all are welcome to share your feelings about your book boyfriends. So comment and let me know!!
