When Sirimavo Bandaranaike became the world’s first woman prime minister of what was then Ceylon in 1960, it caused international concern. How could a woman cope with such a demanding task?

Sirimavo is credited with changing perceptions of female leadership, and for implementing democratic socialist policies that helped close the gap in Sri Lanka’s economic classes.

She is credited for reforming the British colony of Ceylon into an independent state and to move away from its colonial past.

She was also the first non-hereditary female head of government in world history. Although her tenure was marked by various problems, some achievements include the creation of the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs and the implementation of socialist policies aimed at curbing inequality.
